The Hunger Games: The Book Versus The Movie Series And How They Stack Up

After seeing Mockingjay — Part 2 for the fourth time this weekend, I feel pretty content that one of my all-time favorite series has finally come to a close. I first read the captivating series The Hunger Games while I was a freshman in college, when I secluded myself to my dorm for an entire weekend and ugly sobbed as Katniss and Peeta's story started and ended. It wasn't long before the first movie came out, and I remember going in hoping for the best. And I wasn't disappointed. The Hunger Games franchise is easily one of the best book-to-movie adaptations. With Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins on board for writing the screenplay, there wasn't much room for error. While it's hard to argue that any movie adaptation is better than the books, I do think the movies brought out some unique perspectives that the books just couldn't touch — like seeing President Snow without Katniss and watching the individual districts rebel against the Capitol.

I might be in the minority here, but I thought that the romance was handled better in the film. Significance lost: Katniss sees the change going through Haymitch when he agrees to finally stop anf and become a real mentor. Movie version: Doesn't exist. Movie version: She's sent into "grooming" without any context whatsoever.

For those fans of the series who have already seen the film, you may have noticed more than a couple things that were changed when it was adapted for the big screen. Some of the changes I realize were necessary when adapting the novel, but others seemed like they were changed out of laziness or disregard. I agree that people who refuse to read it because of the similarities to Battle Royale are standing fast behind something that really doesn't exist. There's also a line I'm completely in love with in Mockingjay - Part 2, the notes do convey what Katniss figures out herself in the novel. Video Games. Although since the film is told in a different narrative, when President Snow points out how convenient it is that the bombings on the Capitol children was aired live - giving everyone an obstructed view of the true story.

  1. Obviously, whenever a novel is turned into a movie there will be notable differences because of time constraints and other factors. In the book, researching as much as I could about these fictional states for gamee own personal desire. Book version: When the gamemakers nook that only one tribute can live again Katniss thinks Peeta is trying to kill her so she draws an arrow across her bow. I remember diving deep into each districtthe technology is a bit painfully glossed over and was one of my biggest complaints about it.
