What is historical memory?
As part of the round table organized during the conference, this paper is a presentation of the research conducted by the CEMRA at Stendhal University-Grenoble3 on memory, history and fiction, followed by a reflection on the issue of commemoration. The issue at stake dovetails with the topic of the two conferences I organized in Grenoble in and They were centered on history and memory, and how fiction writes or rewrites history, and fills in the blanks of official history. The two series of conferences actually form a diptych, which shows that the writing of history is articulated on both memory and oblivion. Even though the work of the historian is based on the selection and analysis of documents and primary sources, even though it aims at telling the truth about past events, it is also a narrative, a textual construct, which can interestingly be set in parallel with the writing of fiction. It was thus challenging and fruitful to set this process in parallel with modes of representation of the past in fiction, and to compare the two genres in the reconstruction of Indian history. The conference was an opportunity to confront a plurality of genres, voices, points of view and modes of representation fiction, but also travel writing, theatre, cinema which counterbalance monologic discourse, especially as far as colonial history is concerned.
