Solid State Devices and Materials - IOPscience

Solid-State Devices and Applications is an introduction to the solid-state theory and its devices and applications. The book also presents a summary of all major solid-state devices available, their theory, manufacture, and main applications. The text is divided into three sections. The first part deals with the semiconductor theory and discusses the fundamentals of semiconductors; the kinds of diodes and techniques in their manufacture; the types and modes of operation of bipolar transistors; and the basic principles of unipolar transistors and their difference with bipolar transistors. The second part talks about the kinds of integrated circuits and their future developments; amplifiers, including their fundamentals and different types; and the principles and categories of oscillators. The third part discusses the applications of solid-state devices; transistor parameters and equivalent circuits; and the fundamentals and applications of Boolean-algebra.

Solid-state electronics means semiconductor electronics; electronic equipment using semiconductor devices such as transistors , diodes and integrated circuits ICs. The term "solid state" became popular in the beginning of the semiconductor era in the s to distinguish this new technology based on the transistor, in which the electronic action of devices occurred in a solid state , from previous electronic equipment that used vacuum tubes , in which the electronic action occurred in a gaseous state. A semiconductor device works by controlling an electric current consisting of electrons or holes moving within a solid crystalline piece of semiconducting material such as silicon , while the thermionic vacuum tubes it replaced worked by controlling current conducted by a gas of particles, electrons or ions , moving in a vacuum within a sealed tube. Although the first solid state electronic device was the cat's whisker detector , a crude semiconductor diode invented around , solid state electronics really started with the invention of the first working transistor in Atalla and Dawon Kahng at Bell Labs in The replacement of bulky, fragile, energy-wasting vacuum tubes by transistors in the s and s created a revolution not just in technology but in people's habits, making possible the first truly portable consumer electronics such as the transistor radio , cassette tape player , walkie-talkie and quartz watch , as well as the first practical computers and mobile phones. Examples of solid state electronic devices are the microprocessor chip, LED lamp, solar cell , charge coupled device CCD image sensor used in cameras, and semiconductor laser.

Synthesis Lectures in Solid State Materials and Devices will publish to page publications with two basic goals in mind: 1 develop the basic physical concepts to understand current and future electronic materials and devices; 2 provide a sound understanding of current solid state devices and technology so that their applications to electronic circuits and systems can be appreciated. This series will provide an overview of the most important types of solid state devices. The lectures will describe the operation and design issues of the devices, point out how materials properties affect device operation, and discuss the overall architecture issues for systems. The authors selected to write the lectures are leading experts on the subject, and have extensive academic or industrial background in device physics, materials science and ultra large scale integrated circuit technology and systems.
