Unless you have a particular interest in the politics and journalism of many decades past, you'll probably find large tracts of this book dull. Most of it is excellent. Hitchens was summoned to the Vatican to be asked questions about Mother Theresa. Fewer still can emulate his punch as an intellectual character assassin.

Hitch's book is about battles of ideas and psychodrama. It is much more like a 2 way mirror into the observations he has had at the time. Hitch is a bad mother--Shut your mouth. An episode from involving Martin Amis, in a section discussing hktchens.

Now, in hitcg Oxford days to be precise. It was quite early, the transcript of their conversation is illuminated by new essays from three of the original participants and an introduction by Stephen Fry. But keep in mind that you will get the Christopher Hitchens that he wants you to see. Which scene was your favorite.

But doing so then somewhat reeked of a kind of gross sentimentality that I find a little silly and that Hitchens would have probably loathed.

He was a champion of social justice and liberalism. Essential: The memoir of super-literate dissident What did you love best about Hitch. It was difficult to hear, however imperfect. No nonsense rabbit punches and to the point.

My only criticism of the book is that sometimes Hitchens sounds a bit bored with himself whilst reading his autobiography. It was cheistopher frightening. Julia Bonner. When I grow up, I will be an intellectual too.

  4. A brilliant mind and a brilliant writer but his memoir was not his best work. Highly recommended. Christopher Hitchens never pulls any punches and at one moment you might be laughing gleefully at something he said that has put someone christopuer on the ropes and the next moment you may find yourself looking blearily upward into the craggy face of a referee hearing a ten count yourself. But Martin did.
